Government investigations of I-9 forms have reached an all-time high. In 2012, 3,004 audits were conducted. This is up from 250 in 2007 and 500 in 2008. Additionally, according to the Society for Human Resource Management, while I-9 audits used to be random, they are now more often a product of disgruntled employees complaining to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
